Right Here, Right Now

Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 10:31 NKJV

Do you ever feel like what you’re doing right here, right now, doesn’t matter?

I don’t know about you, but sometimes, I feel like spiritual greatness is just on the other side of a window. On the opposite side of the window stand incredible women of faith: martyrs, missionaries, minister’s wives…amazing women making immense sacrifices, performing miracles, leading others to Christ, and overall, turning the world on its head in God’s holy name.

But I stand on the other side of the window—the normal, mundane, everyday side.

I’m not going to a 3rdworld country to spread the good news—I’m going to my normal job serving food.

I’m not performing miracles–I’m doing normal homework and working towards a college degree.

Can you relate to this feeling of insignificance?

Maybe you feel that during the “menial” tasks of the day: prepping lunch for the kids, doing laundry for the second time that week, studying for exams, getting groceries, scooping up after the cat again…the list of “mundane” tasks can go on forever and sometimes feels like it does.

Sometimes, I feel my insecurities of worth welling up inside me.

Maybe you’ve heard this voice too:

Does what you’re doing even matter? Can your daily, sometimes boring activities give glory to God?

Oh, my discouraged sisters—yes, yes it can!

The Bible commands us that whatever we do, we do it all for God’s glory (1 Corinthians 10:31). Not just the “spiritual” things, but the messy, mundane, normal tasks of the day are to be done for God’s glory.

So how exactly can we do that?

1). Be Faithful

            And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,

Colossians 3:23 NKJV

 So what does that mean for us today? It means God has called us to do the job set before us to the best our abilities. That doesn’t just mean “jobs” as in “careers.” That can mean cleaning at home, doing homework or taking care of the dog. We are to be faithful to do what we said we would do (James 5:12), whether or not people are watching (Colossians 3:22), whether or not we’re working with people we like (1 Peter 2:18). Who knows? Maybe your faithfulness now is the answer to someone’s prayers.

Put your hope in this, sisters: God sees you and He will your reward your faithfulness to the big and small things (Colossians 3:24). So come on, ladies—let’s go!

2). Be Thankful

            Rejoice always, praying without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

2 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NKJV

I’ve noticed many of the tedious things in my life can come from blessings. I have to clean my room, (tedious work) but I have a room to live in and possessions to put away (blessing). I have to study for a test, (tedious) but I have the opportunity to go to school (blessing). I have to clean counters at work, (tedious) but I have a job (blessing).

Many of the tedious things in life are opportunities for me to give thanks for blessings God has bestowed upon me.

So what are we waiting for? Let’s give thanks!

3). Pray

            Give us this day our daily bread. Matthew 6:11 NKJV

I struggle putting new attitudes into practice. I usually start the day off well. Then hour into the shift, there’s that one customer that comes in—and I’m tempted to completely throw out any visage of Christian kindness.

The fact is we need God’s daily provision of strength for the day. He is the one who gives us new hearts (Ezekiel 11:19) and the Bible encourages us to pray for wisdom, forgiveness, and for help in seasons of trouble (James 1:5; 1 John 1:9; James 5:13-16).

You can get creative with your prayers—maybe as you are working, pray that every person that walks by your office or counter has an encounter with God. Maybe as you are taking care of the kids, pray that God would direct their steps that day.

That’s not to say God may call you out of the season or place you are in to something else. That’s not to say it’s wrong to want a different season of life. But if all we do is wait for that other “adventure” to come to serve Him, we will miss out on the opportunities God has given us now.

So let’s fling open the “spiritual window”—God is in our midst (Hebrews 13:5). Right here, right now, let us serve the Lord in whatever we do.

In her free time, Chloe enjoys playing board games, building Legos, hiking, and spending time with her husband.

Elisha was born in the Philippines, but has spent most of her life in Albuquerque, NM. She has a love for bringing women together through the love of Jesus, and wants to use her God-given gifts to honor the Lord. She often calls herself the "reformed prodigal daughter", and wants to show other women who may have strayed from faith that they can be redeemed and start anew. In her free time, Elisha enjoys going on adventures with her husband Garrett, son DaVinci, and their mini zoo of animals. She has a passion for hosting get-togethers, traveling, and reading.
