Your God Made You Purposefully

Do you like what you see when you look in the mirror? If you don’t, then you’re taking your cues from the world instead of your heavenly Father, because the truth is you are fearfully and wonderfully made. David wrote in Psalm 139,

You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed (vv. 13-16).

God is an incredible artisan, and He made you exactly the way He wants you. He wove and embroidered everything about your body so delicately, intricately, and beautifully, from the time you were in embryo form. More than that, God predestined you before the creation of the world (see Ephesians 1:4-5). As God told the prophet Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you” (Jeremiah 1:5).

He gave you your personality, your innate abilities, your spiritual gifting, and the purpose for which He has set you apart. And there is no one else like you in the history of the world. You are who you’re supposed to be. God made you for Himself.

Not only that, but God also keeps your calendar. David went on to write, “In Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them” (v. 16). I don’t know the times or seasons for your life, but He does.

God also thinks of you constantly. “How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand” (vv. 17-18). Think about it: God is omniscient, all-knowing—and He spends His time thinking about you. No revelation could ever plumb the depths of His thoughts about you. How impossibly great is that?

This means it’s not what you think about you that matters; it’s what God thinks about you that matters. This is why Paul wrote, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5, NIV). When was the last time you made one of your thoughts—especially about yourself—obedient to Christ?

God knows everything. He knows the exact axis of the earth. He knows the breadth of a butterfly’s wing. He knows the right combination of hydrogen and oxygen to make water. No book would be big enough to hold all the things He knows. So why don’t you believe what He says about you? Why don’t you believe He’s intricately made you to be the exact human being you are? Do you think you know better than Him? No way. You just need to believe Him.

Dear friend, I pray that God would so utterly transform your mind that you would come to see that what He thinks about you is more important than whatever you think about yourself. I pray that you would be able to look in the mirror and say, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made”—and believe it.
