Biblical Boundaries
“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:23
Boundaries: A Gift, Not a Restriction
Boundaries: what’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear that word?
Does it excite you because you set them confidently, or does it cause a little panic because you worry about what others might think?
As a parent, I set boundaries for my children out of love, wanting to protect them.
Remember the boundaries God gave Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden? They could eat from any tree except the one in the middle of the garden (see Genesis 3:2-3). God didn’t set these limits because He is mean; He set them because He loved them and wanted to protect them from the consequences of disobedience.
The same is true for us today. God gives us divine discernment to know when to say yes and when to say no as we bring our plans and desires before Him.
Wisdom Shared: Learning from Others
A friend of Sheologie, Whitney, shared her wisdom on boundaries with us ladies last night. She spoke not only from experience but with such boldness that I left feeling inspired to shift priorities and protect my time in ways that honor God.
She referred us to several Scriptures that offer guidance on both how and why to set boundaries biblically. For example, Titus 2:12 instructs us “to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age.”
We can become so busy and consumed with life that we miss what God has called us to do.
We don’t have to succumb to the pressure to do it all or please everyone. We are instructed to guard our hearts, protect our time, and live as though our hours are precious; because they are!
Whitney asked a question that really made us pause… “Who do you fear? Do you fear man or God?”
My immediate, “correct” Christian response is, of course, God. But if I’m honest, I also fear what others think way more than I should. You too, perhaps?
Thankfully, Whitney offered practical steps for when we are faced with saying yes or no. She walks us through an action plan, encouraging us to be “Kingdom-minded and Kingdom-centered women who guard our hearts and our time, pursuing the Kingdom first in all things.”
Living Boldly in Freedom
Let’s commit to being women who don’t let feelings drive decisions, because feelings aren’t facts.
Instead, let’s model healthy, biblical boundaries and boldly live in the freedom to protect what is ours.
Until next time, shine bright, sisters-
Not for praise, but for the One who saves.
