Let Patience Grow
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
Galatians 5:22–23
Patience. Yikes.
Of all the fruits of the Spirit, I’d say this is the one I struggle with the most.
Why patience, you might be wondering? Well, the short answer is selfishness.
When I stop and ask myself why a particular situation or person can cause me to lose my patience so quickly, the answer is almost always the same: I’ve made it about me, my expectations, and how I think things should go.
I want things to go my way.
I want people to respond the way I think they should.
I want things to happen on my timeline.
But maybe patience isn’t just about waiting.
Maybe it’s about learning to surrender my expectations, my timeline, and my need for control to the One who knows far better than I do.
Wisdom Shared: Learning From Others
Courtney Aragon, a pastor’s wife and friend of Sheologie, blessed us by sharing what the Lord has revealed to her about patience.
She said, “Impatience is thinking from a worldly perspective instead of a heavenly one. It should be called IN-patience because it usually occurs when we are looking INward (pride of life, lack of gratitude).”
That was such a beautiful reminder that if we simply shift our perspective vertically instead of horizontally, our patience would remain much more intact.
It isn’t easy, by any stretch of the imagination, to instantly look at a person or situation with an abundance of patience without being fully connected to the One who is always patient with us.
As an INpatient person by nature, I was so thankful that she shared practical steps for living a life of patience:
- Remember His patience
- Follow His example
- Begin with surrender
- Learn to sit in the discomfort
- Keep your eyes on Jesus
- Choose gratitude
- Hide His Word in your heart
- Release what you can’t control
- Invite someone in
When Patience Runs Thin
I know some people I would genuinely label as patient people.
If I’m honest, they seem much happier, too.
What I’ve noticed is that they’ve learned to release control of a situation or a person and trust that God is in control of it all.
There is a certain peace that comes from knowing we don’t have to manage every outcome.
And that kind of trust brings enough peace to be patient!
Abide & Grow
So today, let’s pause often.
Let’s intentionally look up instead of out.
Let’s reflect on the goodness, faithfulness, and sovereignty of God.
Let’s ask Him to allow His level of patience to overflow from us and onto the people around us.
Because patience isn’t something we produce on our own…It is fruit of the Spirit, and the best fruit grows when we remain connected to the Vine.
Until next time, shine bright, sisters-
Not for praise, but for the One who saves.
