What’s In Your Heart?
“For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”
Matthew 12:34b
Have you ever said something and wished, as soon as you said it, that you could go back and try again?
Girl, have I.
Words can come out so quickly, but their impact can last much longer. They have a way of affecting not only the people who hear them, but also the way we see ourselves and the things we believe.
Scripture is full of reminders of this. To name a few, Psalm 18:21 tells us that the tongue has the power of life and death. Luke 6:45 tells us that our mouths speak what our hearts are full of. Proverbs 12:18 tells us that a reckless tongue pierces like a sword, but a wise tongue brings healing.
Our words matter!
Wisdom Shared: Learning From Others
A sweet friend of Sheologie, Noelle Gemmer, shared with us last night a powerful reminder that what we say is a direct reflection of what we have allowed into our hearts.
She beautifully tied this into how each of us should assess and replace the way we speak to those around us, specifically those we love most. Because, let’s be honest, sometimes the people closest to us get the version of us that we would never let a stranger see.
When we say something we shouldn’t have, Noelle suggested that we take a moment to identify the root of where those words came from and then address that root so we can change the way we speak. She challenged us over the next 30 days to commit to practicing one habit that will positively impact the way we speak to those around us.
Whether it’s getting off of social media, bringing our feelings into submission, apologizing quickly, praying for patience, praying for your husband, or whatever it may be, pick that one thing that you can commit to doing every day for the next 30 days.
One small, intentional change can be a powerful place to start.
A Heart Check
Acknowledging our shortcomings when it comes to holding our tongues is part of the maturing process we all go through as Christian women.
But how do we do this?
First and foremost, we must go to God. We must ask Him for wisdom, as it says in James 1:5. Thank God that He gives generously the wisdom that we lack, even the wisdom to know how to think before we speak.
Then, we need to make sure that what we are allowing into our hearts is pleasing to God, so that what we speak reflects His love to those around us.
So ladies, as we encounter others today, let’s make sure to ask the Lord to provide us with the wisdom we need to know what to say and how to say it.
Because what’s in our hearts will eventually come out of our mouths.
Let’s make sure it’s something that reflects Him!
Until next time, shine bright, sisters-
Not for praise, but for the One who saves.
