The Proverbs 31 Woman: What Is Her Why?
In our previous two posts on the Proverbs 31 woman, we’ve looked in detail at all the things this virtuous wife and mother does. But I think we can get so caught up in what she does that we sometimes forget her why. What she does is not as important as why she does it. And the culmination of these twelve verses shows us her motivation: she fears the Lord. “Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised” (Proverbs 31:30).
The fear of the Lord is simply a reverential awe that inspires holy submission to a loving God. This motivation guides the godly woman through all seasons of life. She sees the wisdom in obeying what God tells her to do and seeks to honor Him with her whole life. She knows Jesus is not just for Sundays and quiet times. Her relationship with the Lord influences her every decision.
As a result, she is a woman who is to be praised. Underscore this in your mind. She does not seek accolades; instead, they follow her choices. She is praiseworthy rather than cringeworthy. Instead of shying away from her, we can embrace her as an ideal for us today. We can relate to her values. We can admire her pluck. We can emulate her principles. And we can inspire others to do the same.
